English 272 Writing about Research
Emphasis on understanding and employing primary and secondary research methods commonly used in higher education (surveys, interviews, focus groups, historiography, library research, etc). Focus on formulating research questions, using appropriate methods to gather data, analyzing data, and writing about the results in the form of academic argument using appropriate documentation and conventions. Appropriate for all majors.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 or equivalent.
Target Student Population
All majors, but particularly:
- Undeclared Arts and Sciences
- Those pursuing writing certificate
Course Objectives
This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding and ability to use both primary and secondary research methods in an academic setting. In the course students will be asked to:
- Study and apply a variety of research methods, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, historiographies, library searches, etc.
- Develop their own research style through the practice of the aforementioned methods
- Conduct detailed academic research projects, using the skills learned during the semester.
- Learn and implement principles of effective academic research design
- Become familiar with a variety of requirements researchers must know when conducting scholarly projects
- Consider the ethics inherent in academic research
- Reflect on their own research skills and work to expand and develop them throughout the semester
