English 316 Elements of Style

Sample Assignments:

Unit I: introduction to classical and contemporary rhetoric as a basis for analysis and evaluation of writing and style.

Unit II: Study style at the micro-level; that is, study the functions of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs.

Unit III: Analyze style at the macro-level by studying different forms and functions of writing (like academic, creative, popular, and online styles), and study documentation styles across the disciplines.
  • Experiment with different writing styles
  • Participate in group workshops designed to give practice in analyzing, and ultimately improving, writing styles.
  • 5 Essays (Personal, Descriptive, Observation, Persuasive, Analytical)
  • End of the semester portfolio (Choose 3 of 5 essays plus self-reflective essay)
  • Short writing assignments and exercises
  • Writing Journal
