English 379 Rhetoric of Science

Introduces students to the role rhetoric and language play in science.  Examines the role of rhetoric in scientific discoveries and failures, and in communicating discoveries to the public. Analyzes role of ideology in scientific discourse and the rhetorical role visuals play in scientific writing. Prerequisite(s): ENG 102 or equivalent.

Target Student Population

  • Undeclared science students
  • English majors

Course Objectives:

Students who satisfactorily complete this course will be able to
  • read, analyze, and understand science writing as it appears in general news sources, substantive news sources, and scholarly/ academic/professional sources;
  • identify rhetorical components in science and technology writing;
  • recognize the rhetorical similarities and differences among the various forms of science writing;
  • understand the public’s reliance on rhetorical writing for its knowledge or lack of knowledge in the current scientific and technological arena;
  • follow in depth one or more current science topics as presented in the three major public writing formats: general news, substantive news, scholarly and academic journals;
  • use proven rhetorical techniques to present scientific and technological research, information;
  • use appropriate principles of design, formats, and styles in science writing.
