Course Description:  

This course is designed to examine the administrative processes involved with the management of interscholastic and intramural programs.

 

It is the responsibility of each student to read and understand this syllabus.

 

Course Objectives:

 

Knowledge:   

1.      Gain an understanding of management processes and their universal nature

 

2.      Create awareness as to the importance of developing one’s management skills (i.e., technical, human, conceptual, group, and personal)

 

3.      Understand the administrative processes involved in the management of sport programs

 

4.      Become familiar with the variety of trends, problems, and research within the area of sport administration

 

5.      Identify trends, current events, and innovations within the sport and world, and how they impact upon managerial decision processes

 

 

 

 

 

Comprehension:

1.      Summarize basic management/leadership theory and how it has evolved

 

2.      Gain an understanding of organizational behavior and basic motivational theories

 

3.      Cultivate and understanding of various philosophies of sport and the management of sport

 

Application:

            1.   Apply research techniques to the management process

 

            2.   Discuss the fact that the management of interscholastic athletics and intramurals carries with it a tremendous responsibility and implications for the students, parents, and coaches involved in these programs

 

Analysis:

            1.   Evaluate classroom speakers

 

            2.   Distinguish between a well-run interscholastic program and one that is unable to meet its goals and objectives

 

Synthesis:

            1.   Improve communication skills through written assignments, oral presentations, and class discussions

 

            2.   Develop ability to work with others toward the completion of common goals

 

            3.   Foster creative and leadership abilities

 

Evaluation:

            1.   Evaluate the various planning, preparation, and pro-active leadership techniques relative to the management of an interscholastic/intramural athletic program

 

            2.   Compare and contrast different learning processes

 

            3.   Evaluate the notion of equifinality, i.e. there is no “best” way to manage an organization and, in fact, employment of different processes may be utilized to achieve identical results

Attendance Policy:

Students are expected to attend and participate in class discussions and activities.  Students who are excused from class meetings or activities are responsible for making arrangements with the professor to make up their work.

Provisions For Students With Special Needs:

Any student requiring extra time or help with assignments or class work should speak with the course instructor during the first full week of class.

 

 

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

 

BOOK REVIEW (150 Points)

Each student is expected to complete a review of one of the books listed below.  The review must be typed and should include the following:

 

  1. Title Page

 

  1. Reference citation (author, year, title, publisher)

 

  1. Author’s background

 

  1. How leadership is defined by the author

 

  1. What leadership approach or style does the author promote 

 

  1. What strategies and/or suggestions does the author prescribe for developing your leadership style, working with others, and dealing with change

INTERVIEWS (200 Points)

Each student will conduct at two interviews (one HS athletic director and one HS coach).  Each interview should last approximately 30 minutes.  The student is required to develop a list of questions that will be utilized for the interviews.  Prior to the interviews, the student should develop a cover letter that will be sent to the individual to be interviewed.  The cover letter should indicate the purpose of the interview, scope of the questions to be asked, and permission to tape the interview.  Upon completion of the interviews, the student should analyze and summarize the data from the interviews.

INTERVIEW PROJECT DUE:  Tuesday, December 11, 2001 

 

 

STRATEGIC PLAN (400 points)

Working in groups, students will develop a five-year strategic plan complete with a mission statement, objectives, goals, and steps to achieve those goals.  Each group will make a 30-minute (5 minutes for questions) presentation of their strategic plan to the class.

 

STRATEGIC PLAN & PRESENATION DUE: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2001

 

 

FINAL EXAM (150 Points)

The final exam will cover the material presented in class and in the readings.  The exam will consist of essay questions and will be cumulative.
