A class attendance policy is in effect for first-year students defined as students who have not yet accrued 30 semester hours of credit. For such students, the allowable number of absences is equal to twice the class meeting times a week. Core is an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to fulfill and to integrate the University's General Education requirements. The LTC serves as the university’s laboratory for innovation in learning and teaching. Service learning is pursued in several locations across campus. The coordinator of Service Learning in the Ryan C. Harris Learning Teaching Center assists professors with the integration of community-betterment projects into their class curriculum, with the intention of fostering stronger learning of class material. A full range of support is available from project creation to meaningful class reflection exercises during and after the project. Working both together and separately, the Service Learning Coordinator collaborates with the Center for Leadership and Community (CLC) as well as the Center for Social Concern. The CLC works on projects with professors and individual students in targeted neighborhoods in the Dayton community.
Finally, the Center for Social Concern works with students and student organizations, providing volunteer and social justice opportunities to those students in Dayton, nationally and around the world. In this case, the work is not necessarily linked to the student's curriculum.
