The Dynamic Earth

SCI 210

Heidi McGrew, Instructor

Objectives

This class builds on the basic understanding of physics developed in SCI 190 in order to develop a comprehensive view of the Earth system and human interactions. This course covers three of the four component parts of the Earth system: the solid Earth, the atmosphere and the hydrosphere. SCI 210 lays the groundwork for the study of the biosphere, the fourth component of the Earth system which is explored in SCI 230.

In addition, I hope that students taking this class will develop:

1. An increased enjoyment of the natural world

2. An awareness of science and environmental issues that affect society and the individual student

3. An awareness of earth science in the media

4. An appreciation for how earth science might one day affect the student personally, with an emphasis on natural hazards.
