Objectives
This class builds on the basic understanding of physics developed in SCI
190 in order to develop a comprehensive view of the Earth system and human
interactions. This course covers three of the four component parts of the
Earth system: the solid Earth, the atmosphere and the hydrosphere. SCI 210
lays the groundwork for the study of the biosphere, the fourth component
of the Earth system which is explored in SCI 230.
In addition, I hope that students taking this class will develop:
1. An increased enjoyment of the natural world
2. An awareness of science and environmental issues that affect
society and the individual student
3. An awareness of earth science in the media
4. An appreciation for how earth science might one day affect the
student personally, with an emphasis on natural hazards
Policy on Plagiarism
If you turn in an assignment (paper, essay, takehome exam, etc.) for this class, please make sure
that you carefully reference all material and restate it in your own
words. Do your own work! We are all aware of papers that are for sale on
the internet. If I find that someone has used someone else's work or
improperly referenced it, I will assign a grade of "0." I will
also pursue the matter with the college disciplinary board. Cutting and
pasting material from the internet is plagiarism even if the section is
referenced. See me if you need help or guidance with properly referencing
material.
