The day was very cold.  The snow storm the day before yesterday, the thaw yesterday, and the refreezing resulted in the landscape being covered with thick ice.  The trails had to be negotiated carefully, It was generally safe to step on the thick ice which gave way but at least had some traction.  The treadmarks from the service tractor which had recently traversed the trails had to be avoided as they were slick ice.  As a result of the challenging conditions, the hike was shortened a bit to about 3 miles.  However, everyone got a great workout due to the difficulty of walking in the ice.  5 hikers attended this hike and they thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular winter scenery.
