Directions:

You are to write six (6) of the following seven (7) essays. You must answer ## 1 and 7*. The essays should be about one to two pages in length, typed double spaced in MS Word. [SUBMISSION SHOULD BE BY E-MAIL ATTACHMENT  AND NOT BY INCORPORATING YOUR ANSWER INTO AN E-MAIL MESSAGE: <Lawrence.Ulrich@notes.udayton.edu>] . You are to (1) recount what the authors you have read on the topic have said, (2) try to relate ideas with each other, and (3) state your own reactions/reflections about the issues under exploration. Please be clear about where your opinion begins. You should not merely state an opinion but give carefully considered reasons for your opinions. Remember that this is a philosophy course and the reasons which you develop and organize to support your opinions will be more important than the opinions themselves. Ultimately you should demonstrate that you (1) have read the text, (2) are familiar with the ideas, (3) have thought about them carefully, and (4) have been able to formulate soundly based opinions as a result of the reading you have done.

*1. What are the essential features that constitute sexual harassment? In what way is sexual harassment a violation of the Deontological approach to ethics. Apply your reflections to the Salomon Smith Barney Case, which you will find linked to the "Sexual Harassment" unit in this part of the course.

2. Do you think that employees have a responsibility for the tone of the moral climate (culture) of a corporation? Explain. If they are responsible how can they discharge that responsibility. If they are not responsible, who is responsible --- or is it too much to ask a corporation to have a moral culture?

3. In the "Employee Security" section in this period of the course, you will find an article called "Blogging about the Workplace" from USA Today (05/27/05). Reflect on the actions of  Peter Whitney. Do you think he engaged in unethical behavior? Explain. If his company attempted to restrict his "electronic activity" Do you think his rights would be violated? Explain. Formulate 2 company policies (using the phrase "Company X WILL . . .) that will protect both an employee and the company in matters of this sort.

4. What obligations, if any, do you think a corporation has to protect the environment? Give a specific example to illustrate the points you are making. Use the Utilitarian context to justify the position that you take.

5. As we are moving forward into the 21st century, identify, and explain the significance of, 3 virtues that a business leader should possess and practice in order to make his/her corporation a responsible member of the business community.

6. Look at the readings in the "Employee Security" section for this period of the course. Do you think that employees have a right to job security? Explain. What level of benefits do you think they should enjoy? Explain. Is it morally permissible to withdraw benefits from employees once they have been promised? Explain. Use one of the ethical contexts we have been utilizing in this course to justify your claims.

*7. In the first exam in question #7 you were asked to identify (in a preliminary way) three major issues in contemporary business practices that you thought were very significant and needed to be addressed. Revisit those issues now. Simply list the three issues as (1), (2), (3) and then explain how you have gained new insight into the issues as a result of the reading you have done in this course. If you find that one or the other of the issues you have previously identified are not so significant anymore, explain why this is the case. Then identify and explain another issue to replace the one(s) you have discarded.
