THE PURPOSE OF A WEB CONFERENCE (AUDIO CHAT ROOM).
A Web Conference (Audio Chat Room) allows students to interact with each other over the computer in real time. To participate in a Web Conference all the participants must be on line at the same time. To participate in the Web Conference check the schedule below for the appropriate date and time.

THE WEB CONFERENCES IN THIS COURSE ARE OPTIONAL, I.E., ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE WEB CONFERENCES WILL EARN STUDENTS 10 EXTRA CREDIT POINTS FOR EACH WEB CONFERENCE.

THESE WEB CONFERENCES WILL BE AUDIO. A HEADSET IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE CHATS.

We will be using Microsoft Live Meeting for the Web Conferences (Audio Chat Rooms).

THIS TOOL ALLOWS US TO USE AUDIO FOR THE WEBCONFERENCES INSTEAD OF REQUIRING US TO TYPE OUR MESSAGES TO EACH OTHER. ACTUALLY, TYPING IS NOT ALLOWED EXCEPT IN EMERGENCIES, E.G., "A TORNADO IS ABOUT TO LIFT THE ROOF OFF MY HOUSE AND EXPLODE MY COMPUTER," OR, "I AM BEING ABDUCTED BY ALIENS AND THEIR DRIPPING BODILY FLUIDS ARE MUCKING UP MY KEYBOARD."

TO SEND A TYPED MESSAGE IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, CLICK ON THE Q&A TAB ON THE TOP TOOL BAR AND TYPE IN THE SPACE PROVIDED.

Directions for Microsoft livemeeting Participation

Before joining the a web conference for the first time, you will need to install the Microsoft Live Meeting 2007 client. This client is PC only and requires you to have administrator privileges on your machine to install. You can download the Live meeting installer from here: <http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir.aspx?AssetID=HA101733831033&CTT=5&Origin=HA102389001033 >

The installation of the live meeting client may take about 15 minutes.

You may have to disable a browser pop-up blocker.

SETTING UP YOUR HEADSET FOR USE IN THE WEB CONFERENCES

Before being able to participate in the Web Conference you must be sure to set up your computer and select the proper devices in the livemeeting program.

YOUR COMPUTER:

1. Go to "Start."

2.Click on Programs.

3. Click on Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 client. (You have  to have downloaded this from the link (above) on your website)

4. Enter the Meeting ID, exactly, that is listed on the course website

(e.g., Phl 315 - 5). This is found below in the meeting schedule.

5. Ignore the Entry Code box.

6.The Location box should automatically display this address: https://www112.livemeeting.com/cc/udayton

7. If the address is not displayed, then enter the address.

8. Click "Join."

9. Enter your name.

10. Click "Continue."

A "MEETING ID" IS REQUIRED AND IS FOUND ON THE WEB CONFERENCE SCHEDULE.

The actual Web Conference program will begin about 15-30 minutes before the Web Conference is scheduled to begin.

There are icons at the top of the page to indicate the status of your microphone.

You have to click on the microphone and "unmute" it on the tool bar to turn it on so you can speak in the Web Conference. If that does not work, click on the "Voice and Video" tab on the tool bar and click on the microphone icon that comes up there.

The speaker icon should be "unmuted" by default.

For best results for participating in the Web Conference, a headset is desirable. Be sure to check your microphone/headset before the chat to be sure it is in working order.

When you wish to speak, go to the color icon on the top, right-hand corner of the tool bar and select the purple color to indicate you wish to speak.

Check your e-mail in case further instructions have been forwarded to you regarding methods for communication in the Web Conference.
