COURSE EVALUATION FORM

Directions:

You are to write three (3) of the following ## 2,3,4,5 essays. YOU MUST ANSWER # 1. So you will write a total of 4 essays. The essays should be about one to two pages in length, typed double spaced in MS Word (2003). [SUBMISSION SHOULD BE BY E-MAIL ATTACHMENT  AND NOT BY INCORPORATING YOUR ANSWER INTO AN E-MAIL MESSAGE: <Lawrence.Ulrich@notes.udayton.edu>] . You are to (1) recount what the authors you have read on the topic have said, (2) try to relate ideas with each other, and (3) state your own reactions/reflections about the issues under exploration. Please be clear about where your opinion begins. You should not merely state an opinion but give carefully considered reasons for your opinions. Remember that this is a philosophy course and the reasons which you develop and organize to support your opinions will be more important than the opinions themselves. Ultimately you should demonstrate that you (1) have read the text, (2) are familiar with the ideas, (3) have thought about them carefully, and (4) have been able to formulate soundly based opinions as a result of the reading you have done.

Submitting the Work by E-Mail <Lawrence.Ulrich@notes.udayton.edu>:

In submitting your work by e-mail attachment,  please consult the Q&A Page for directions on submitting your work. Following the directions posted there as question number 1 with minimize any  problems you may have in submitting your work and my returning it to you.

1. What are the essential features that constitute sexual harassment? In what way is sexual harassment a violation of the Deontological approach to ethics. Apply your reflections to the Salomon Smith Barney Case, which you will find linked to the "Sexual Harassment" unit (Assignments webpage, Week 9) in this part of the course.

2. Look at the Whistleblowing case of Ted Beatty from The Wall Street Journal (Assignments webpage, Week 8). How do the virtues of integrity and loyalty figure into the activity of whistleblowing. Sissela Bok (textbook, page 128) presents a strategy for engaging in whistleblowing. What is this strategy and how would it have helped Ted Beatty, if he had followed it? Do you think you could be a whistleblower? Why or why not?

3. Karl Marx discusses the concept of "alienation." What does he mean by this concept and what features of  Capitalism does he think contribute to alienation. Granted that most governments espousing Marxism have moved away from Marxism to Capitalism, are there any lingering features of Capitalism that still seem to contribute to human alienation as Marx conceived of it? How can ethical business practices reduce the alienation that troubles Marx?

4. A number of companies are reducing their pension benefits for retirees. Look at the section on Employee Security and reflect on the issue of cutting pension benefits for retirees. Do you think those companies who cut pension benefits for retirees have engaged in unethical behavior? Look at this issue from the perspective of the principle of justice and the notion of rights --- it might help if you return to the section on Rights, Human Rights, and Cultural Relativism in the Second Period.

5. With all the talk about global warming these days, what, if any, are the responsibilities of the corporation regarding the environment? How does the stakeholder theory help us to understand this problem? Is the environment itself a legitimate stakeholder? Give a utilitarian analysis of the approach that you have taken in answering this important question.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. There are readings in the Third Period to prime your thoughts about this difficult issue, which is a ghost continually haunting the U.S. Supreme Court. Some of the readings relate to affirmative action in academe but many of those reflections are equally applicable to the workplace. You should focus on the applicability of affirmative action to the WORKPLACE. The principle of justice should be an important part of your discussion. Also go to the Second Period, section "Rights, Human Rights, and Cultural relativism" and click on the U.S. Bill of Rights, scroll to the bottom and click on the 14th Amendment. Read section one and pay special attention to the "equal protection clause."

This TD3EX will run from July 10 to midnight of July 17. Groups will be assigned at the time of the posting.
