We will be using Sametime3 for the Chat Rooms. You will find the directions for Sametime3 below.

WHAT IS A CHAT ROOM (LIVE SESSION)?

A Chat Room (Live Session) allows students to interact with each other over the computer in real time. To participate in a Chat Room all the participants must be on line at the same time. To participate in the Chat Rooms check the schedule below for the appropriate date and time.  Then follow the "Guidelines for Participating in the Chat Rooms (Live Sessions)." Note that the Chat Rooms (Live Sessions) will be conducted using LearningSpace5.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS OF THE CHAT ROOMS (LIVE SESSIONS).

1. Students' name will be registered automatically.
2. Comments need not be lengthy but they should be substantive. You may want to enter your comments in pieces (i.e., clauses) instead of long comments all at once. This will let others know you are contributing and that they should look for more.
3. A substantial contribution is NOT merely logging on to the Chat Room and sitting there. There has to be ACTIVE participation to earn credit for participating in the Chat Room.
4. Even though the Chat Rooms may be password protected, you know how hackers are; anyone might be able to read what you say. This includes someone from Bangladesh, the Vatican, or your parents, or your physician, or your boss, or your sixth grade teacher. Speak honestly but not offensively.

5. You are only required to participate in 3 of the 6 Chat Rooms.

6. Each Chat Room is worth 30 points. There will be no extra credit points for participating in more than 3 Chat Rooms. Although you are welcome to participate in more than 3 Chat Rooms.

5. Be challenging to everyone in the group --- as well as me!

GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE CHAT ROOMS (LIVE SESSIONS) USING SAMETIME3.

DIRECTIONS DOWN THE INFORMATION HIGHWAY TO

ULRICH'S CHAT ROOM (LIVE SESSION)

Use MS Internet Explorer 6.0. If you are using AOL, minimize the AOL browser and activate Internet Explorer. If you are using a MAC you might be more successful with Netscape.

IF YOU HAVE ANY DIFFICULTY ACCESSING OR PARTICIPATING IN THE CHAT ROOM, EXIT SAMETIME3 AND SHUT DOWN YOUR BROWSER. THEN RESTART THE IE BOWSER AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS TO THE CHAT ROOM.

IF YOU HAVE FURTHER DIFFICULTY CLICK HERE FOR "TROUBLESHOOTING" SUGGESTIONS. YOUR COMPUTER MAY NOT BE CORRECTLY CONFIGURED, OR YOU MAY NEED TO ADD MICROSOFT VIRTUAL MACHINE. IF YOU HAVE MUSICSHAREWARE  ON YOUR COMPUTER, YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THAT PROGRAM IN ORDER TO USE THIS LOTUS PRODUCT.

Sometime before the scheduled chat, go to <sametime3.udayton.edu> and click on the prompt that allows you to download the Sametime program. You should only have to do this once. This is a small program and it will only take a couple of minutes to download it.

When the time comes for the chat, go to <sametime3.udayton.edu> and login using the prompt in the upper right-hand corner. Your username and password are the ones you use for Lotus Notes. If you cannot remember these, call 9-3888 (the Help Desk) and they will provide assistance for you.

Click on "attend a meeting," click on "active," and click on the meeting name. You will have to wait a couple of minutes while the meeting room is being prepared.

Click "yes" to any security warnings that may appear.

You will type your message at the bottom of the screen and click "send" or hit "enter" and you will see your message on the scrolling screen above. To enlarge the scrolling screen just catch it with the double arrow on the top border and drag it up.

If the Chat Room screen over runs the edges of your monitor go to the top left-hand corner of the screen and click on the IE icon and then click on "maximize."

The Chat Room will be scheduled to be active 1/2 hour before the chat actually begins. This gives participants a chance to assemble. It will also be active for 1/2 hour after the chat is scheduled to end in case anyone wants to "hang out." [Beverages will not be served.]

Click "X" in the upper right-hand corner to exit.
