Health Care Law Externship - Fall 2003

The health care law externships are supervised, practical application of previous, or concurrently, studied health care law. Available externships include:

bulletCorporate Legal Counsel, Miami Valley Hospital. The Corporate Legal Counsel Office provides in-house legal services to 772 hospital beds. The Corporate Legal Counsel responsibilities includes contract law, administrative law, hospital malpractice, risk management, preventative health law (staff teaching) and general legal opinions. The emphasis is hospital law.
bulletCorporate Legal Counsel, Good Samaritan Hospital. The Corporate Legal Counsel Office provides in-house legal services The Corporate Legal Counsel responsibilities includes contract law, administrative law, hospital malpractice, risk management, preventative health law (staff teaching) and general legal opinions. The emphasis is hospital law.
bulletGeneral Counsel, U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, VA Medical Center. The General Legal Counsel is in-house counsel for 250 in-house beds and 5 out patient clinics. The General Legal counsel also serves the Veterans Integrated Service Network. The General Legal Counsel responsibilities includes contract law, administrative law, hospital malpractice, risk management, preventative health law (staff teaching) and general legal opinions. The emphasis is health care law. 
bullet Medical Law Consultant, Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The Medical Law Consultant for Wright Patterson Air Force Base provides services to 12 military bases located from Maine to North Dakota. The Medical Law Consultant's responsibilities includes medical malpractice, risk management, preventative health law (staff teaching) and general legal opinions. The emphasis is military health care law and Federal Tort Claims Act.
bulletThe Claims Division of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, 2750th Air Base Wing, Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The claims office investigates and prepares legal memorandum opinion on all medical negligence claims filed against the Air Force within Ohio and eastern Kentucky. The Office assists the office of the United States Attorney in defense of medical negligence involving Air Force personnel. The emphasis is medical malpractice.
bulletOhio Commission on Minority Health. Columbus OH. This office evaluates both national and state legislation base on its impact on minority health. The placement would involve working with office on a health law legislative agenda.

Credit: The student will receive 2 - 3 hours ungraded course credit for successful completion of the externship. The student will not receive any payment, salary or monies for the externship.

Eligibility: The students must have completed, or be taking "Health Care Law." or "Medical Malpractice". In general, preference will be given to students who have taken Health Care Law. Students who have taken Medical Malpractice will be given preference for the Claims Division of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate.

Externship Requirement: To receive academic credit a student must, among other things, work with the placement 10-15 hours per week for at least 14 weeks during the semester. The 10-15 hours includes all time spent on assignments and not merely time physically present at the placement. The student will meet with Professor Randall at least every 2 weeks to discuss how the externship is progressing. The student will maintain a weekly journal. The final grade will be based on satisfactorily completing the externship and evaluation of all work product prepared as component of the externship.

Application and Selection Process: If you are interested in a externship submit a resume with a cover letter to Professor Randall, by March 15th. The resumes and cover letter will be submitted to the supervising attorneys who will provide input. The final placements will be made by Professor Randall. You may apply for all six placements. Do not register for an externship until after you have been selected for placement. You should register for an alternative course which you can later drop if you are selected.
