What are the Praxis II examinations?

Praxis II examinations assess students' knowledge and skills about the education profession and the content area(s) they plan to teach.  Students usually take the required tests prior to completing their undergraduate/graduate degrees.  States mandate scores candidates must obtain for initial licensure.  Check the Ohio Department of Education website (click the link for the PDF file for ODE) or the Educational Testing Service website to determine Ohio's required test(s)/scores for your licensure area(s).  Note some tests have been discontinued.  (For other states, visit http://www.ets.org/praxis/prxstate.html)

Additional information is available at "The Place for Praxis II Information" designed by Linda Billman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, College of Education, Ashland University.  Some information is tailored for Ashland students, but the links are excellent.

Site visitor Manny Pomales, Jr., Ph.D., provided the following question/answer:

"How can I find the Praxis II results for the academic years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 for all Colleges of Education in Ohio?"   Manny Pomales, Jr., Ph.D. (6/28/2003)

Where can I find these resources?

Copy or key book titles in your local or the OhioLINK catalog to determine availability.  If no copies are available through OhioLINK borrowing, complete an Interlibrary Loan request.

CAUTION:  The content quality of these items will vary by publisher.  For example, the Educational Testing Service study guides include classroom scenarios, multiple choice, short answer and essay questions that simulate the actual test.  Arco and Barron guides have multiple choice questions that may be good to review content knowledge.--Linda Billman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, College of Education, Ashland University (CMCIG Spring 2003 Workshop, May 16, 2003)

How should I prepare for the Praxis II tests?

-- Visit the Educational Testing Service website for test dates and "Test at a Glance" (TAAG) PDF files.  Complete the "Test at a Glance" (TAAG) for your licensure area(s).  Focus your test preparation on knowledge/skill weaknesses.  Search for titles in Praxis II Resources List to assist you with this task.

-- If you experience test anxiety,

    1) don't take 3 tests in one day

    2)  review your college textbooks, especially educational psychology and methods

    3)  find campus tutorial programs for reading and writing skills and Praxis II test preparation  (In addition to content knowledge, refined study skills and literacy skills will improve test performance.--Linda Billman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, College of Education, Ashland University (CMCIG Spring 2003 Workshop, May 16, 2003)  Dr. Billman shared her "My Principles of Learning & Teaching PowerPoint Tutorial" at the workshop and gave permission to add this link to the Praxis II Resources page.  Click the link to view an introduction to the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test.

-- "Read the test questions before you read the case"--Linda Billman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, College of Education, Ashland University (CMCIG Spring 2003 Workshop, May 16, 2003)

-- "Pace yourself while taking the tests to complete all questions in the time allotted."--Julie Hart, 2002 University of Dayton Early Childhood graduate

For content area test preparation, reviewing gr. 4-12 teacher editions of textbooks may help.
