SBA Policies and Procedures
Post Tenure Review
In accordance with the university's policy on periodic performance evaluation of tenured faculty, the following guidelines have been adopted for peer review of tenured faculty in the School of Business Administration.
Tenured faculty, including those who are assigned administrative responsibilities as department chairs, associate deans, and directors, will be reviewed at least once during each six-year interval. The purpose of peer review in the School of Business Administration is to assist faculty members in their professional development. This is accomplished by examining the performance of the faculty member over the past five years and providing suggestions for further development. Peer review is a unique opportunity for the tenured faculty member to assess his or her professional accomplishments and plan for the future with the aid of colleagues in an atmosphere characterized by support and positive intent.
The review shall be based on the faculty member's professional responsibilities in teaching, research, and service, with due consideration to the time devoted to each. The review may not be waived for any tenured faculty member but may be deferred in rare circumstances when the review period may coincide with an approved leave. Deferral of review of an active faculty member shall not, however, extend beyond one year from the originally scheduled review. When a faculty member undergoes a comprehensive review for promotion or appointment to an endowed position, that review takes the place of the post tenure review and that faculty member's next post tenure review will be in six years from the time of that review. In addition to the mandatory post tenure review, a tenured faculty member may voluntarily undergo a review at any time.
The department will provide individual notice of intent to review at least six months in advance of the review. The review will normally occur at the time of the annual review process. At the time of notification of the review, the department chair shall give the faculty member copies of his/her last five annual reviews and relevant statistical summaries of teaching and research during that period. The faculty member being reviewed shall submit a current curriculum vita, annual reports for the past five years, and a statement containing the accomplishments in teaching, research and service during the review period, as well as plans for the future. The faculty member may submit any other additional materials she or he deems appropriate.
The review will be carried out at the department level by a committee of tenured faculty. The committee will consist of three or more tenured faculty members, at least one of whom should be from outside the department. At least one of the committee members will be selected by the candidate and at least one by the department chair. It is imperative that the committee members will be chosen on the basis of their objectivity and academic strength. The committee members will elect the chair of the committee. Evaluation will include a review of the curriculum vitae, teaching evaluations for the review period (including student evaluations and supporting evidence), annual reports for the review period, research and publication, service and other professional activities, and other relevant materials submitted by the faculty member. If requested by the faculty member, he or she will be provided with the opportunity to meet with the review committee. The chair of the review committee will communicate the result of the review in writing to the faculty member, as well as to the department chair and the dean.
