University of Dayton Chapter
American Association of University Professors
Jan 19, 2012 Minutes Unapproved)
Roesch Library Room 501, 3:00 p.m.
Presiding: Joseph Watras
Meeting called to order on 19 January 2012 at 3pm. The first business item was to approve the treasurerís report. The chapter is fortunate to have in Bill Friel a capable and trustworthy treasurer. He showed the members that the chapter has some funds in the account.
The second item of business was to discuss the social that chapter held on 18 November 2011 in Kennedy Union. Entitled Conversations with the Provost, the meeting focused on issues surrounding the petition from several students who asked to start an organization of free thinkers on campus. Dr. Joseph Saliba, the students, and several faculty members engaged in an informative, convivial, and thoughtful exchange of views. The Campus Report presented a lengthy and accurate account of the discussion in issue number 4, volume 39 that the University communications office distributed on 9 December 2011.
The attending members of the chapter decided on 19 January that they wanted a follow-up to the conversations with the provost. The topic of this social event will be the appropriate role of the AAUP chapter on a faith-based campus. The hope is that this discussion will illuminate the role of the AAUP in defending studentsí rights to academic freedom, and it might entail some discussion of attacks on academic freedom on other campuses during the recent campaign against legislative efforts to limit teachersí unions. The tentative date for the discussion is Friday, 16 March 2012 from 3pm to 4:30pm. The chapter asked the director of the Ohio Conference of the AAUP if there are representatives or faculty members in nearby universities who might come to Dayton to participate in this conversation.
The next chapter meeting is Thursday, 16 February 2012 from 3pm to 4pm.
