University of Dayton Chapter
American Association of University Professors
Oct 20, 2011 Minutes Unapproved)
Roesch Library Room 501, 4:30 p.m.
Presiding: Joseph Watras
Meeting began at 4:30pm on October 20 in Roesch Library room 501. The members accepted the minutes of the meeting of 8 September 2011 and the treasurerís report, which showed the good state of the chapterís finances.
The members noted that the chapter has planned a social event entitled Conversations with the Provost for 18 November 2011. The social will begin at 3pm in Kennedy Union room 310. It should last about an hour or so. The Provostís office has generously provided refreshments, such as coffee, tea, and cookies. Guests should feel free to bring up any concerns they wish because the topics of conversation are not limited.
Another issue that the members discussed was the question concerning students establishing a university approved society for atheists. This led to discussions about the nature of academic freedom and whether the AAUP protects the freedom of students to inquire openly. The members decided two things. One was to invite the students who wanted to create this society to the discussion with the Provost. The other was to invite members of the Ohio Conference of the AAUP to campus next semester to discuss the nature and limits of academic freedom. The hope is to arrange such a conference on academic freedom for the coming semester.
After the social with the Provost, the next chapter meeting will take place on 6 December at 3pm.
