After last year's success at taking the prize for best participation in Bike to Work Day, we have expanded the 2013 bike month events. It's going to be tough to keep our first place position in the Bike to Work day regional competition this year, but with your help, it can be done.

The League of American Bicyclists is the national sponsor of Bike Month. There are more than 70 miles of bike trails in Montgomery county alone, and Five Rivers MetroParks supports cycling in this area with numerous events and facilities. This year Bike to Work Week is May 13-17, and Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 17.
Bike Events for Bike Month 2013:
Saturday, April 27th – SECOND STREET MARKET TRIP
(11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) - Join others for an early lunch at 2nd
Street Market. The group will depart from the RecPlex at 11:00 a.m.
and return at 1:00 p.m.
Wednesday, May 8th - BROWN BAG DISCUSSION
(11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m) - “Over the river and thru the woods: Introduction
to the Miami Valley's bike trail system”. This hour panel discussion will
share different riding styles for different lifestyles and an overview of
the Miami Valley biking trails. Location: RecPlex Meeting Room B
Monday, May 13 - The Flyride
(11:00 am to 1:00 PM) - Starting outside the Campus Recreation’s RecPlex
at 11:00 a.m., there will be a few bike mechanics to share how to check
out your bike in preparation for each ride. One of our ride leaders will
lead the group to Carillon Park for lunch and back. Culp’s Café will offer
a 10% discount for lunch purchases if there are 15 participants buying
lunch. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch. The group will
depart back to campus at 12:40 p.m.
Wednesday, May 15 - BROWN BAG DEMONSTRATION: Bike tune-up
(11:30 am to 12:30 pm)“Get in gear: Bike tune up 101”
Learn the basics of keeping your bike aired, lubed, and tuned up. Campus
Recreation’s RecBike Mechanics will lead this beginner clinic for those
interested in learning routine cleaning and maintenance techniques. No
need to bring your bike. RecBikes will be used as a demonstration.
Location: RecPlex Meeting Room B
Friday, May 17 - Bike to Work Day: Help us win the competition again!
Meet at 7:00 a.m. in front of the RecPlex for the regional Bike to Work
Day event, organized by Five Rivers MetroParks. This event includes a
free pancake breakfast, as well as a "team challenge". Last year the
university placed first in the team challenge and are ready to win
again! Please show up and register at Riverscape Metropark as a
University of Dayton participant for the team challenge to help us win
the glory of "Bike to Work Day Champions".
You can ride directly to RiverScape Metro Park for this event, or you can meet us for the group ride from the University and back. If you are using a RecBike rental, please arrive in time to pick up and meet the group outside the RecPlex. We will meet at 7:00 a.m. depart campus for RiverScape at 7:15 a.m. sharp! After our free breakfast, the group will depart from RiverScape at 8:30 a.m. and ride back to campus as a group.

Everyone attending any of the bike events will be entered to win a free tune up by our RecPlex bike mechanics. We will also be giving away two sets of tickets to a Dayton Dragons game( each set admits two people). In addition, every individual attending these events will receive wellness points from UD's Wellness Program. Individuals participating in Bike to Work Day is eligible to participate in Five Rivers MetroParks Team Challenge, and receive your portion of the glory of victory (as well as share in any awards we may receive).The team challenge details are now posted by FiveRivers Metro parks, on their team challenge page. Additional Information
All participants must wear bike helmets. Participating individuals must also complete a Campus Recreation Informed Voluntary Consent and General Release Agreement, which is available in the RecPlex or at the meeting location before each event.
