Dr. Kathy Bullock (Berea College) will open the evening with an introduction to the early history of gospel music. Participants will be drawn into the experience through singing, hand-clapping and dance.  Area artists will be featured in a concert that you do not want to miss!

 

Saturday, September 29

 

8:30        Calling all to the village for celebration

 

8:45 Ð 9:45 Opening Session:

 

The History of Gospel Music.  Led by Dr. Raymond Wise, this session will provide a survey of the history of African American Gospel music starting from its inception in the late 1920s and 30s through to the present.  It will cover the key musical examples and artists from various Gospel eras such as the Congregational, Traditional, Contemporary, Word/Ministry, and Urban/crossover.

MT 116          Gospel Keyboard Techniques ¥ Dr. Kathy Bullock

 

This session is designed for people who already know how to play the piano. Using a simple hymn, Dr. Bullock will teach participants how to create an authentic gospel sound and feel.  

 

MT 104          Worship and Praise Dance ¥ Ms. Monique Satchell

 

Praise dancing is  lyrical dancing to music with motions and gestures used to express a personal and passionate love for Jesus. Using flags, flash  ribbons and scarf's Ms. Satchell will take participants into the world of praise dance. Get ready to dance!

 

 

MT 112          Called To Sing, 13 Mistakes To Avoid When Starting Your Music Ministry ¥ Dr. Naima Johnston

 

Don't miss this interactive informational session for anyone interested in a career in full time music as a Christian performer!  Learn the secrets to booking, the importance of marketing and the need for a ministry action and marketing plan.

 

MT 114   Interactive Review of Select Contemporary Gospel Music  ¥

Prof. Everrette Parker

 

This session is designed for the choral directors/general music  teachers who want to bring  diversity to  their  programming.  Participants will explore techniques and  stylistic elements associated with the performance of gospel  music  correlated with the music content standards. Focus of choral review will be the top current, popular and appropriate selections for all levels. Songs are to be sampled through live performance and a review of recordings with  individual  scores.  Each participant will receive a complete song packet to keep. All selections will have the vocal parts scored; at least half, will also feature the accompaniment transcriptions/reductions.

 

 

MT 120          The Worship and Praise Ministry ¥ Min. LeShawn Streater

 

Participants will explore the wonderful world of worship and praise from a practitionerÕs perspective. Min. Streater will guide participants through the selection of music for a Sunday service and the characteristics that worship leaders should exhibit.  Plan to sing as Min. Streater leads participants in an authentic worship experience.

 

 

Sears Recital Hall   Introduction to Vocal Improvisation In Gospel            ¥

Dr. Donna Cox /Anthony Haywood

 

This is an interactive exploration of some of the techniques that can be used in performing gospel music. Participants will learn a series of suggested ÒrunsÓ or embellishments that they can apply to a simple hymn or to any other piece to give it a more authentic gospel feel. This is a beginning workshop, appropriate for people who do not already know how to improvise.

 

 

 

 

 

 

11:15 Ð 12:30  Group Session

 

Led by Dr. Cox and assisted by Kathy Bullock, Raymond Wise, Anthony Haywood, Mycal Kelly and others, participants will be taken ÒinsideÓ the technique of improvisation. Cox will ask a series of questions to which the panel will respond musically.

Members of EHS will show participants to the UD Food Court, as needed. There are also several fast food establishments within walking distance of the campus. A list will be provided.

Mass Choir Rehearsal

 

All participants will learn gospel music performance techniques by becoming members of the mass choir. The choir will be taught several different gospel songs representing different styles. The choir will perform these pieces at the culminating concert.  Be sure to invite your friends and family.
