Requesting space on the new Academic Server

The Academic Server was designed to support the Academic endeavors at UD.  This site was designed for web sites that are in support of these efforts.

This is a server which is fully FrontPage enabled.  You may use other web authoring tools besides FrontPage to publish to this server.

  1. Request a new web site on the Academic Server
    1. Go to http://academic.udayton.edu
    2. From the main page, click on the link to request a new account.
(Please note that if you are taking a FrontPage class, you will be given a generic lab account to use while in the classroom and do not need to request an account.)
    3. Fill out the New Account Request form.
    4. You will get the new website information within 1-3 business days.

First Time users

This is a Windows 2000 web server with FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions installed to help you maximize your website's potential. The username and password you were given for this server will work on this web server only.

To change your password, click here. (You must know your current password.)

This server has been equipped with a challenge question/answer system. This allows you to recover your password for your account should you forget it, saving you from visiting Miriam Hall 53 in person with a photo ID to get your password reset. It is recommended that you set your challenge question/answer after you finish reading this entire page so that you can always have access to your password.
To access this feature, go here.
If you ever forget your password and you have previously filled out the challenge question/answer, you can recover it after any incorrect login attempt.

To upload content to your account, you can use FrontPage 2000 or any ftp program in combination with your username and password. When you are asked in FrontPage2000 what site to open, you will need to type in http://academic.udayton.edu/accountname (substitute your personal account name for accountname). If using an ftp program, you will open the host name of academic.udayton.edu in combination with your username and password. Note: Do not add anything in the ftp program to the hostname of academic.udayton.edu; if you do, it will not work.

When you are ready to give out your website URL to others, please give them
http://academic.udayton.edu/accountname (substitute your account name for accountname).

If you have a subaccount for a class, please click here for more information on using your subaccounts.

Importing Files and Webs into your Web Site from FrontPage

If you would like to import files or web sites off the Internet, FrontPage allows you to do this.  When you want to move a web site from one server to a different, it is best to import the old web site to the new site.  If you currently have your web site on the WWW or homepages server and would like to transfer it to the new Academic web site, this would be your best option.  Some of the hyperlinks and images may fail to import.  Please expect to do a little clean up work.  You may need to reapply some hyperlinks.  Graphics may need to be added again.

To import a web site here are the steps you would follow:

  1. Request a new web site on the Academic Server using the above method.
  2. Launch FrontPage
  3. Click Open
    1.  (Ctrl+ O)
    2. Launches Open Dialog Box
  4. Click “My Network Places”
    1. This is in the left gray rectangular window
    2. Your computer may have a slightly different name
  5. Type in your new web site in the “File Name” rectangle
    1. Example: http://academic.udayton.edu/YourName
  6. Click Open
  7. You will be prompted for User Name and Password
  8. Select OK
  9. Select Open in lower left corner
  10. Select File/ Import
  11. Click on From Web
  12. Make sure From a World Wide Web Site is selected
  13. Type your old web site in the Location rectangle
  14. Click Next
  15. Deselect all three Limit options
  16. Click Next
  17. Click on Finish
  18. Click Yes to any other questions you may be prompted with.
  19. Your web site should be published to the new web server

What can and can't be uploaded and/or run

The Academic web server is fully FrontPage 2000 compatible, meaning anything that comes with FrontPage 2000 should work fine. This includes the ability to insert java or JavaScript, make ASP pages, have MS Access databases with a web interface, forms that email results or enter info into a database, FrontPage guest books, threaded discussions, themes, etc. In case you need to send an email from a web page, the server is even running ASPMail version 4 (directions on how to use this product available at (http://www.serverobjects.com/comp/Aspmail4.htm).

There are some things that technical support cannot be provided for, such as the actual java/JavaScript code you use. Other programming languages such as perl or PHP are not supported and will not work on academic.
