Events of Interest

Renovation of the Second Floor of Miriam Hall:

The renovation of the second floor of Miriam Hall began this summer.  Information on the construction can be found on the university's construction web page that includes information on other construction as well:

Two important computer scientists died:

George B. Dantzig, professor emeritus of operations research and computer science at Stanford University, and Leonid Khachiyan, professor of computer science at Rutgers University died within two weeks of each other.  Prof. Dantzig invented the field of linear programming and devised the "simplex method."  Prof. Khachiyan developed the first polynomial-time algorithm for the solution of linear programming problems.

Vacation in Orange County:

I vacationed in Orange County this summer.  On my way to LAX, I traveled from Dayton to Charlotte with Dave Klusas (UD CIS 2003) and Sara.  Here are some pictures of them that I took at the Charlotte airport.  After taking the pictures, I caught my flight to LA and they caught their flight to Wilmington, NC.

As part of the vacation, I visited Disneyland just after the 50th anniversary and got to see the new California Adventure Park.  I especially liked the Soarin' over California and Disney's Aladdin as well as the attractions in Disneyland.  I had a (free) day pass thanks to a friend who is a cast member at Disneyland.  Very kind.

My niece had an internship at Walt Disney Feature Animation and I was given a tour of the studios after I signed a non-disclosure agreement.  The tour was extremely interesting, but because I signed the non-disclosure agreement, I can't say much.  There is a lot of information on the web including information on films in production.

I stayed in Laguna Beach.  It is an artist colony with many art galleries.  One gallery had an especially interesting name....

On the evening of July 4th, just before the fireworks, I took a picture of the sunset over the Pacific Ocean from an overlook.
