Taking charge of the basics means first and foremost, taking charge of the environmental and economic obstacles. If there is any way that you can go prepare for the bar without working - do so!

Environmental and Economic Basics

bulletSecure a quiet place to study.
bulletRemove distraction during your study time.
bulletDuring your scheduled study time be pre-occupied - be selfish.
bulletHave time that is reserved for your family and friends and yourself - even during your most intense study period. But when it is time to study - be selfish!
bulletIf at all possible, do not a hold a job - the number one cause of failure is inadequate preparation .

 

Physical Basics

bulletPreparing for the bar is like running a marathon! If you plan to pass you'll need to be alert and have energy and stamina. To be successful in law school you will need to:
bullethave proper mental conditioning
bullethave proper physical conditioning, and
bullethave careful pacing.
bulletTo pass the bar you will need to go into exams in peak of mental/physical fitness
bulleteat properly
bulletget adequate sleep
bullethave fun! regular fun is vital to combating mental staleness and psychological disorientation

 

Psychological Basics

bulletAttitude and character are decisive factors in achieving success.
bulletHaving a positive attitude and being a person of honor and integrity will take you far.
bulletYou must be able to keep a positive attitude while going through the process of learning a large amount of detailed information without any feedback.

Remember this is a long distance run. You need to prepare adequately each day and you need to take care of yourself throughout the study period. Make sure that you :

bulletGet adequate sleep
bulletEat properly
bulletGet exercise
bulletSchedule recreation and time away from study
bulletAllow time in your study for emergencies.

 

Develop a plan for the bar review period

bulletDon't go about preparation haphazardly - develop a schedule.
bulletDo active instead of passive of learning
bulletPassive learning equal reading and re-reading outlines and materials
bullettaking practice exams and reviewing answers
bulletdoing multiple choice questions and reviewing the answers
bulletdeveloping flashcards with terms and rules on them and working through them.
