Ideas for Coping with Stress
Prepared by: Steven D. Mueller and Bruce E. Duke, Ph.D.
bullet Accept the fact there are things you cannot change!
bullet When you feel you are under stress, stop and ask yourself why this situation is stressful.
bullet Rank your concerns according to importance to you. Then take one hurdle at a time. It is difficult to deal with everything at once.
bullet It often helps to share your concerns with an objective other; someone you trust and respect. Do not keep it all inside!
bullet Stay active. Do something for others, it helps to take your mind off yourself
bullet When uptight, work off the tension by some structured activity, athletics is often effective.
bullet Balance work and play by taking breaks during the day. Allow yourself time to relax.
bullet Practice relaxation techniques (deep breathing, positive imagery, and muscle relaxation).
bullet Avoid self-medication. Pills, booze, etc. are not the answer; they do not teach you how to cope!
bullet Seek professional guidance if you are not satisfied with your progress.
