The Intensive English Program at the University of Dayton recommends the following online resources:

GENERAL ESL SITES

  • ESL Gold has activities and information on all skills with practice in TOEFL, TOEIC and Business English.
  • Many Things provides practice in grammar and vocabulary with some listening and pronunciation exercises.
  • Nonstop English gives you exercises and quizzes in grammar and vocabulary. It requires membership, but it is free.
  • Karin’s ESL Partyland has various types of exercises with many good links.

READING MATERIALS

  • The Reading Room provides free access to online books, magazines and reference materials as well as to American and international English newspapers.
  • Read Print offers classic books to read online.
  • USA Today is a national newspaper.
  • Dayton Daily News provides primarily local and national news.

LISTENING

  • ESL-Lab is a site with many listening activities and quizzes for all levels.
  • English Page provides links for free online radio, news, movies, music, etc.
  • English Listening has listening texts with transcripts in two areas: one free and one requiring paid membership.
  • ELT Pod has beginning –level listening passages which can be accessed online or downloaded.

TESTING

  • The ETS website has information about TOEFL, TOIEC, TSE, SAT, GRE and other tests administered by ETS with some practice tests, as well.

DICTIONARIES

  • OneLook has quick definitions, collocations, special use meanings, and a basic list of synonyms and related words. There are also links to multiple dictionary entries. And if you can’t think of the word you want, use the reverse dictionary to find a list of words related to your topic.
  • The Cambridge Dictionary of American English has clear simple entries for beginners. It also has sentences which use the words in context. Try it here:

  • Discover Ohio is the official website for tourists in Ohio. You’ll find a lot of information about interesting attractions and events in the state.
  • Cincinnati USA will show you why the Cincinnati area is a fun place to visit.
  • Are your planning to visit Columbus, Ohio’s capital city? First, visit the city’s website Experiencing Columbus for information on places to see and things to do.
  • USA Tourist has tips about traveling in the US and basic information about the most popular cities, states, parks, attractions and events in the USA. It’s a good place to start when planning a trip. For more detailed information go to Tourism Office Worldwide Directory, which has links to the tourism offices of each state (and many popular cities) in the USA and to those of countries around the world.
