Math Club & Pi Mu Epsilon
at the University of Dayton!
Dayton Chapter of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
Math Club is an academic club on campus aimed at building an undergraduate community of people interested in Mathematics. We work to build a network of students and faculty, contribute to the Dayton-area community, and grow academically in Mathematics beyond the classroom. Activities include a picnic with students and faculty, our annual High School Math Contest, lectures about different opportunities involving Math, and stretching our knowledge and experiences of Mathematics. Pi Mu Epsilon, which jointly meets with the Math Club and is part of all of the activities, is an Honorary section of the Math Club. Pi Mu Epsilon has certain requirements and application process to become a member, and each year new members are inducted in the spring.

Meeting Agendas:
09-02-2008
Our opening meeting of the year consisted of an explanation of Math Club and Pi
Mu Epsilon. We all introduced ourselves, so we could begin a new year with
strong relationships. We discussed future events, what to look forward to in the
year, and how each member can be a part of it all. The remaining time was spent
doing mixers and icebreakers to meet and re-meet each other.
9-21-2008
The Math Club Student-Faculty Picnic was a great success! We met at Danielle's
house, and enjoyed corn hole, cake, sandwiches, hummus, Frisbee, and
conversation. While not everyone was in attendance, many were able to come, and
it was a great chance to meet the faculty. Many thanks to all of the faculty
support at the picnic!
10-07-2008
We will discuss REUs, what they are, how to find the opportunities, and what
some of our own Math Club members (Dave Aaby and Jenny Diemunsch) have
experienced through these.
Also, we will be discussing upcoming events - the Putnam Competition & the
Alumni Careers Seminar!
11-11-2008
After having our yearbook pictures taken, we discussed the High School Math
contest - which will be in the spring. We signed up to write problems, and
discussed tee-shirt designs, fund raising, and mailing invitations. This is a
huge event for us! We have a lot of work, but with everyone's help, this is sure
to be a success!
2-4-2009
Dr. Usman discussed his research interests and how he got started in math. We
also discussed the HS Math Contest.
2-26-2009
Dr. Kimberly K??? from Central State visited to tell us about her doctoral work.
She studied robotics, and how to improve current robotics systems.
3-14-2009
High School Math Contest! What a HUGE success! With a tie for 3rd place, our
winning teams came from Fairmont (first) and Carroll (2nd and 3rd).
Congratulations to all of the teams! And a huge thanks to our volunteers and
sponsors!
3-31-2009
After electing officers for next year, we watched an intense episode of NUMB3RS.
Congratulations to our new leaders of Math Club & Pi Mu Epsilon!
