Religious Studies 198     Fall 2004  A Humanities Base Course

The Humanities Base is the set of first year humanities courses for the General Education Program at UD.   Its general theme:  what it means to be human.  This is divided into four subthemes which you will hear often:  autonomy and responsibility, the individual and society, humankind and nature, faith and reason.  Here are the official goals for the HB:

  • Students will begin to develop and formulate their own conception of what it means to be human.
  • Students will understand how the humanities disciplines ultimately constitute an integrated pursuit of the same goals.
  • Faculty and students will form a community of learners through the examination of selected texts and common themes.
  • Students will develop a more critical understanding of Western culture and will be introduced to the richness of non-Western civilizations.
  • Students will develop general level competencies in reading, writing, and information literacy in conjunction with the Competency Program
Rel 198 will pursue these goals, and through class group presentations will contribute also to the the communication competency goal that is otherwise addressed through specific communication courses.

Each of the departments offering HB courses (Eng, Hst, Phl, Rel) selects certain readings that all of the students in the first year HB courses will read.  These are called "Common Readings."  For Religious Studies the common readings are Genesis 1-3, the Buddha's Sermon at Benares,  Mark's Gospel, and a commentary on Gen. 2-3 by Phyllis Trible.
