Rel 490 – God and Atheism   Winter, 2004

PROCEDURES AND GRADES

Most classes will follow this procedure:

1.  Seminar-Style Reports on Readings
All will read the assigned reading for the next class
A Reporter will be assigned to summarize and analyze the reading.
The Reporter will be responsible for finding background information on the reading.
A Responder will challenge or reflect on the reading,
             finding extra background if needed.
The Reporter and Responder may discuss the reading in advance with others.
     Report
: 8-10 minute summary analysis of reading
        — what exactly is the reading saying?
     Response
: 8-10 minute critique/reflection on the reading and/or the report

       — challenge the claims in the reading and/or reflect on implications

2.  Open Discussion

3.  Background by Barnes for next readings and class.

N.B. For some classes there may be two sets of readings,
       with two Reports and Responses.

The Reporter will earn up to 50 points.  The Responder will earn up to 50 points
Each person will be a Reporter once and a Responder once.
Reporter & Responder grades = 100

Exams
Each exam will offer two questions. You will individually choose one of them to answer.
Each will ask you to review background information, and then to reflect on its implications.
You will be graded on the quality of the background information. Your ideas about its implications are always correct — i.e., will be accepted as correct, whatever they may be. But you must show clearly how they relate to the information and that you understand the information.
Exams are worth up to 50 points each = 150

The 10 minute presentation on your paper will be worth up to 25 points.
[Give some thought to this: write out your comments, if needed; hand out an outline or put it on a power point presentation.]

Participation in the class will earn up to 25 points.
[Please be sure to give everyone else a chance to say something in the class]

The research paper will be worth up to 200 points!

Be sure to read the two pages of guidelines on writing a research paper
