Junior / Music Therapy

Hi!! I am currently a junior music therapy major at the University of Dayton. My hometown is Cincinnati, Ohio. This "small town dressed up as a big city," as described by a member of my favorite local band, Over the Rhine, was a rich environment to begin a love for the arts, specifically music. Involvement in various choirs, as well as piano and dance lessons, allowed me to further appreciate the power and personal benefits of participation in musical activity. However, my interests were diverse, and narrowing my focus to a single career field seemed like an impossible task.

Freshman year of high school, as I was considering work in environmental biology and other zoology-related areas, my piano teacher informed me about a field which made sense on a very personal level. Combining my own commitment to serving other people and my love for music, while drawing on healing techniques used transculturally, music therapy seemed, and still seems, perfect. The University of Dayton with its high standards of excellence and vast opportunities, yet strong sense of community, was reflective of my Cincinnati roots. It has seemed like a home since my very first visit.

Within the music department, I am currently involved in the music therapy club as secretary and in Sigma Alpha Iota, the professional women's music fraternity, as editor. I participate in two choirs, Ebony Heritage Singers and Choral Union. My primary instrument is the piano, but I also enjoy playing the guitar and singing.

Outside of music, I serve as a co-president of Helping Older People, a service club under campus ministry. I do not really have much in the way of spare time, but I do also enjoy accompanying my dog (who howls on pitch), hiking, and listening to music from other cultures.
