Hello! My name is Laura Gutenkauf. I am from Billings, Montana where I graduated from Billings Central Catholic High School in 1995. During high school I attended All-state Band for two years, All-state Orchestra for one year, and All-Northwest Orchestra for two years. The summer before my senior I attended Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, MI for eight weeks. I am currently a junior at UD studying music therapy and I study flute with Prof. Diane Gilley.
People are always asking me how I ended up at UD from Montana. The answer is simple, they had what I wanted! I was interested in attending a Catholic university and discovered that UD has an excellent music therapy program. I will also receive a minor in Religious Studies and Lay Ministry Certification from UD.
I have come to the conclusion that college life is never boring, especially not in the life of a music major. I am involved in several chamber ensembles including flute quartet, Quintet de la Chambre (woodwind quintet), Symphonic Wind Ensemble, University Orchestra, and Hands in Harmony. Just in case I get bored, I am also the president of Music Therapy Club, a member of Sigma Alpha Iota and participate in the 10 am mass choir, Faith Sharing, Bible Study, teach religious education at a local parish.
I am preparing for my junior recital which is currently scheduled for November of 1997. I will be performing Duo for Flute and Piano by Aaron Copland, Sonata in e minor by J.S. Bach, Le Merle Noir by Oliver Messiaen, Sonatine by Henri Dutilleux, First Sonata by Bohuslav Martinu, a piece with guitar, and a piccolo-tuba duet. I am very anxious, and I will be practicing diligently this summer. My flute quartet just made a recording to submit to OMEA for performance at the state convention, and one of the pieces we recorded was Ski Symphonie by Faustin JeanJean.
