A junior majoring in music, Marti Synowka comes from Louisville, OH, a suburb of Canton. She began music lessons on the clarinet in the fourth grade, and in the seventh grade she began studying bassoon with Karen Long and Pat Kroft. While a student at Louisville High School, she was active in the instrumental music program and also participated in the Ohio Governor's Chamber Music Institute, the Canton Youth Symphony, the All-State Orchestra and several other honors bands. She currently studies the bassoon with Prof. Jennifer Kelley Speck. Her recent repertoire includes the sonatas by Telemann, Besozzi, Hurlstone and Hindemith; concertos by Kozeluh and von Weber; and Bourdeau's Premiere Solo. She also enjoys playing the flute and piccolo for fun.

Here at U.D. she has participated in the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Pride of Dayton Marching Band for which she is a squad leader and editor of the organization's newsletter, the University Concert Band, the University Orchestra, and pit orchestras for the opera It Pays to Advertise and the musicals Brigadoon and One Upon a Matress. She also participated in the 1997 and 1998 Ohio Private Colleges Instrumental Conductors' Association Honors Band. Marti also plays with the Quintette de la Chambre Woodwind Quintet and in a clarinet quartet.

Marti is Vice President for Membership of UD chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, and a member of Golden Key National Honor Society. She participates in a Campus Ministry choir for the 10:00 am Sunday mass, and she has participated in other campus ministry activities, including Circle K International, for which she is fundraising chair. Marti is minoring in business administration with tenative plans for a career in arts administration. In her free time, she enjoys recreational walking, playing walleyball, sewing, science and spending time on her computer.
