The University of Dayton places an emphasis on chamber ensemble performance. Instrumental musicians can choose from a wide variety of ensembles in which to play, including string ensembles, woodwind ensembles and brass groups. All chamber ensembles are coached by music faculty, and have the opportunity to perform on chamber music concerts each semester. At UD, the chamber ensembles are community-based, in that an attempt is made to find off-campus performance opportunities for each ensemble, at least once each semester. In the past, UD chamber ensembles have performed at area schools, churches and nursing homes, as well as at community events. Chamber ensembles with a high degree of excellence also have the opportunity to participate in area, regional and national chamber competitions, such as the Fishoff and Coleman Competitions.

Playing in a chamber music group is a marvelous way to strengthen ensemble skills, gain performance experience, and enjoy rewarding social interaction. Students are organized into chamber groups of all types, from duos to quintets, sometimes including piano or other appropriate instruments. Chamber groups meet once weekly for a coaching session as well as one other uncoached weekly rehearsal, at a time convenient for the group. Each group is given the opportunity to perform at least once a semester.

The UD Horn Ensemble is made up of students who enjoy performing works for large horn choir, often eight to ten parts. Members of the UD Horn Ensemble play on Department of Music chamber music concerts, and in area churches, schools and other locations by request and has been a featured ensemble at the Great Lakes Horn Workshop. The UD Horn Ensemble also serves as host for the UD Horn Masterclass Series, a regular event which brings area horn players, student, amateur and professional, to the UD campus four times per year for informal and friendly sessions on various aspects of horn-playing and horn pedagogy. In the past, the UD Horn Masterclass Series has featured such notable hornists as Michael Hatfield, Phillip Farkas, Walter Lawson, Barry Tuckwell and others. This event is always free and open to the public.
Other opportunities for horn players at UD include playing in horn quartets and/or Symphonic Wind Ensemble, registering for special topics sessions in pedagogy, orchestral repertoire, natural horn and horn manufacture, private lessons and performance in various chamber ensembles.
