Richard Chenoweth, Professor, is coordinator of the instrumental program at the University of Dayton Department of Music. His duties include teaching horn performance, coaching chamber ensembles and teaching classes related to brass pedagogy and music appreciation. He is the coordinator of the performance degree program, and supervises special events associated with the Instrumental Program, such as guest appearances by prominent artists including Christian Lindberg, Richard Stolzman, Barry Tuckwell and the Canadian Brass.
He holds the first DMA in horn performance ever awarded by the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati, while his extensive performance background includes current positions as principal horn with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, 30 years as hornist with the Santa Fe Opera, hornist with the Carillon Brass, member of the faculty ensemble Cantecor (music for voice, horn and piano), and the Pro Music Brass Trio, the faculty brass chamber ensemble. Recently, he been asked to perform as an hornist with the orchestras in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Tampa, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia.
His numerous appearances as soloist, recording artist and clinician include performances in Carnegie Hall, France, Hong Kong, and across the US. Recently, he performed the Britten Serenade with the Dayton Philhharmonic Orchestra and recorded as horn soloist with the Czech Radio Orchestra in Prague, Czech Republic. Before moving to Dayton, he played with prestigious ensembles including the Little Orchestra Society of New York and the Royal Ballet of London.
Dr. Chenoweth is a Yamaha Performing Artist. He hosts the UD Horn Masterclass Series, and has been asked to present masterclasses across the US at prominent institutions such as Indiana University, University of North Texas, University of Miami (FL), CCM, University of Wisconsin (both Madison and Milwaukee), University of Michigan, and Southern Methodist University. His former students occupy positions as performers and teachers across the US, while horn students attending UD perform in the UD Horn Choir.
In recognition of his activities as a perfomer, Dr. Chenoweth is the recipient of the Montgomery County's Artist Fellowship, and has been awarded the 1997 UD College of Science's Award for Outstanding Scholarship, as well as the University of Dayton's prestigious 1999 Alumni Award in Scholarship.
