THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN JAZZ
3 Semester Hours, Room: MT 112

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Survey of the literature and performance practices from 1890 to the present. Includes blues, Dixieland, ragtime, boogie-woogie, swing, bop, cool, funky, and current techniques. Open to all university students. (Clusters: Arts & Hum.Exp., X-Cultural)

Gidley, Mark C. Jazz Styles: History and Analysis, 6th ed. with 2 CDs (REQUIRED JDCD=Jazz Demonstration CD, JCCD=Jazz Classics CD)
CDs from Smithsonian Collection of Clasic Jazz collection & supplementary CDs or tapes (available in my "FACULTY RESERVE" box in the "MALL"--Musical Arts Learning Lab--room 109 in this building; see posted hours)

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will be able to identify the basic elements common to all music, and to recognize the unique ways in which these are treated in jazz.
2. Students will be able to listen to music in general and to jazz in particular with a discriminating ear, and they will be able to make educated value judgments.
3. Students will experience recorded and live performances of jazz, and they will, through listening and observation, appreciate the creativity and expression inherent in jazz improvisation.
4. Students will be able to recognize characteristics of the ther various tyle periods in jazz.
5. Students will recognize that jazz is a performer-oriented art form and they will recognize the stylistic characteristics of several prominent jazz artists.
6. Students will recognize the religious and sociopolitical influences that have had an impact on jazz, and especially the ways in which music of non-European cultures (African, Latin-American, Indian) cultures had an impact on American jazz.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
There will be reading assignments, listening assignments, and tests as outlined in this syllablus. Besides regular attendance in class, students are required to attend and to prepare a short (1.5 page, typewritten, double spaced, in 12-point "Times or a comparable font, approximately 250 words per page) critique of two live performances of jazz; one of these two must be off-campus. SEE "Opportunites to Hear Live Jazz" below. ONE REPORT MUST BE TURNED IN BEFORE MID-TERM: WED, 11 OCTOBER! A more specific sheet on performance reports will be distributed.

There will be no make-up tests given for any reason! Students who miss a test will be assigned a topic for a ten-page term paper and will have one week to complete the paper. Since the musical content of this course is not available in borrowed notes, any absence impairs learning the mater; any unexcused absences over two will adversely affect your grade.
