Listen to them on (from an analog tape): DAYTON'S JAZZ LEGEND: NORRIS TURNEY Former saxophonist with Duke Ellington and retired adjucnt professor of jazz studies at U.D., Norris Turney began playing the saxophone around Cincinnati in his late teens. His deep feeling for the blues was nurtured in a Baptist church--"I learned to play the blues listening to church music," he maintains. Turney feels his jazz knowledge is "all natural--a feeling , and a gift." He was influenced by three important alto players: Johnny Hodges, Benny Carter, and Willie Smith. Norris has recorded his most recent CD, "Big, Sweet 'n Blue" on the Mapleshade label. He will be appearing 9 pm-1 am on the third Sunday of each month backed by the Lee McKinney Trio at the Nite Owl in Dayton's Oregon District. Bill Burns '96 & "Generation X" ". . . five of the Miami Valley's most promising jazz musicians." Dayton Daily News Generation X is a Dayton-based quintet dedicated to promoting the American Classical music, jazz. They appear at Dayton and Cincinnati clubs, restraunts and bookstores. Bill Burns (alto sax) leads and arranges for this quintet, one of a handful of local groups performing original material. Mike Techenbrock plays trumpet and flugelhorn, and the rhythm section is comprised of Mike Kotur (guitar), Al Jackson (bass) and Jim Leslie (drums)

All band members maintain a busy performance schedule. "The Tom Daugherty Orchestra" "The Tom Daugherty Orchestra" is a 17 piece Big Band specializing in the original musical arrangements of the Swing Era with a special tribute to Frank Sinatra. The group is under the direction of trombonist Tom Daugherty Pfrogner who has performed with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, and Maynard Ferguson. Featured with the orchestra is male vocalist Pete Sherman who sings in the Sinatra style and female vocalist Mindy Meltzer; also featured is the orchestra's four member vocal group The Sentimental Singers and entertainer Bob Kohn.
The group performs its special "Big Band Bash Show" and travels
Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky and is available for local
functions as well as backing guest artists. Smaller groups are
available. The orchestra has made several recordings and has recorded a
television show. Jazz Faculty in "Standard Time"
The group Standard Time has been together since the middle of 1993, when it was founded by trumpet player Michael Wade. Other members include co-leader Kevin Engel (sax), Khalid Moss (piano), Eric Sayer (bass), Francis Wyatt (drums), as well as Larry Humphrey (electric bass), Kight Butler (drums) and Craig Williams (percussion). Michael, Kevin, Khalid and Francis are members of the jazz faculty at U.D. Personnel shifts so that the quintet is adaptable for different styles and environments. A CD, "Be Truthful," (see above) is currently available. Standard Time performs regionally and has performed at jazz festivals and concerts from Louisville, KY to Buffalo, NY. This past summer they headlined one day at the Gemini Jazz Festival in Buffalo; they opened for Cyrys Chesnut at the Jazz and Ribs Festival in Columbus; and they opened for Charles Earland at the Jazz in Central Park Concert in Louisville.

Jazz performer and educator Hal Melia, a UD grad, plays saxes, flute, clarinet and EWI (electronic wind instrument). He spent 1986-1991 in Los Angeles, recording and arranging with top jazz and R&B groups. He has recorded with artists on several labels, including MCS and Positive. Hal's mainstream performances focus on jazz in the quartet setting, and his quartet currently performs concerts and clinics throughout the Midwest. He is presently teaching jazz at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He teaches privately and performs as a guest artist and clinician in both the classical and jazz arenas.. His premiere CD, WADUYATHINK, was released in 1993 on the Positive label, and it was a Top 25 jazz CD.

CELEBRATION VOCAL TRANSIT IN MOTION
Listen to them (from an analog tape) on: Pretty Good Band The "Pretty Good Band" is a straight-ahead jazz combo inspired by the sounds of the Oscar Peterson Trio with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis. Pianist Tom Lipps, of Cleveland, Ohio, is a recent University of Dayton graduate in Music Education. He eventually hopes to earn graduates degrees in jazz studies and performance. Guitarist Jim Saxa, a former UD student also hailing from the Cleveland area, is currently teaching and residing in Dayton. Bassist Ben Freelove, of Middletown, recently graduated high school and is now taking time to sharpen his skills before pursuing further musical training. All three are students of Mr. Eric Zadan, a prominent local piano and jazz improvisation teacher. The following sound clip is taken from Tom's solo on "Fools Rush In," one of the tracks on a demo CD recorded September 25, 1996. Also appearing on the CD with Tom, Jim, and Ben is drummer Mark Lucas. Mark, a civil engineer and Dayton native, currently resides in Cincinnati.
