MUSIC EDUCATION MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAM

University of Dayton

Masters Degree Program for Music Educators

Core Education RequirementsMusic Ed Concentration RequirementsCourse DescriptionsSummer Courses

We are excited about our summers only Masters Degree Program in Music Education that began in 2002. It is offered through the School of Education as a Master of Science Degree in Education with a Music Education concentration, and is offered in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences.

The design of the program allows students to complete the degree in three summers (approx. 10 semester hours per summer). The music curriculum will focus on practical applications to the music classroom and rehearsal room, centered on the National Standards. We intend this degree to be "teacher friendly," thus all required courses will occur in the summer*. Degree candidates could, however, take required School of Education courses and/or special projects during the school year if they choose, taking the music courses in the summer. Education courses are offered in the late afternoon and evenings. (*Note: EDT 661 & EDT 665 need to be taken in successive semesters.)

A total of 30 hours must be obtained. No more than 6 semester hours of UD workshops can count toward this degree (retroactive with advisor's approval). Transfer hours are accepted with the approval of the advisor.

Procedure to enter this degree program:

  1. Complete an on-line application to the Graduate School (free of charge): www.udayton.edu/~gradsch/

You will also need to send your undergraduate transcripts as well as three letters of recommendation (this information is on the application).

  2. When you have received your letter of acceptance to the Graduate School, schedule an appointment with music education coordinator Dr. Linda Hartley. During your advising appointment you will complete a program sheet that will outline needed courses to complete the degree requirements. This program sheet will be signed by the student, the music education coordinator, and the graduate teacher education coordinator. Please bring a copy of your acceptance letter to the advising meeting.
