What is Philosophy?

The study of philosophy is more than the accumulation of knowledge; it is the development of the love of wisdom. Philosophy addresses fundamental human questions:

  • How should humans live and act? (Ethics)
  • What is the ultimate nature of reality? (Metaphysics)
  • What are the structures of reason and human knowledge? (Epistemology and Logic)

Philosophy explores the rational basis of other areas of inquiry such as science, social science, politics and religion. Philosophy facilitates the development of skills in constructing and analyzing arguments, in reading and writing critically and with precision, and in approaching problems imaginatively and reflectively.

The faculty of the Philosophy Department come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds. Their various interests and experiences exemplify the Department's vision of the relation of philosophy to many areas of study and experience.

Information found at this URL is intended primarily for philosophy majors and students at the University of Dayton who are taking philosophy courses. Information on the department for other audiences is located on the College of Arts and Sciences webpage.
