UNIVERSITY CHORALE is a 30-40-voice mixed ensemble which performs sacred and secular music from all musical eras. Past performances include J. S. Bach’s Magnificat,, Franz J. Haydn’s Missa St. Joannis de Deo, and Mass in Time of War, Ludwig Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia, Franz Schubert’s Mass in G, Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata,W.A. Mozart's Requiem, and a setting of Exsultate Deo, commissioned from the English composer John Gardner in 1994. In 1998, Chorale joined the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus to present Alexander Nevsky by Serge Prokofiev, a first-time collaboration with the Philharmonic for any UD ensemble. Chorale was featured at the Dayton Organist Guild 1998 Hymnfest in a session with Sandra Willetts from the University of Alabama. The ensemble performed The Prayer with the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra, a work by the Bosnian composerDino Xonic for the anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords in Fall 1999. In 1997 and 1999 WPTD Channel 16 produced and broadcast Chorale Christmas specials of seasonal music. Chorale performances also appear on Celebration, a Department of Music CD featuring large ensembles at UD. Chorale has enjoyed performances abroad in the last three years, singing in many of the revered institutions of Christendom.. Chorale initially toured Europe in May 1999. The ensemble performed at St. Giles in Edinborough, St. Paul’s in London and Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Chorale concertized in Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, Venice and Rome in June 2001. Concerts sites included St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, St. Franziskanekirche in Salzburg , St. Florian’s Abbey in Austria, burial site of composer Anton Bruckner, and the Pantheon in Rome. In 2005, Chorale, in conjunction with the Department of Music, toured Germany (Leipzig and Berlin), Poland (Krakow), Slovakia (Banska Bysrika), and Hungary (Budapest).
