*This course is in conjunction with your pedagogy and lab courses. MUS ED majors not registered for any of these courses are required to participate The goal of this class is to assist in preparing music education students to teach and conduct high school choir.

OBJECTIVES

As a result of the experiences provided in this course and through pedagogy and conducting classes (if applicable), you will be expected to:
1) Be familiar with choral literature presented during the semester.
2) Be familiar with a variety of ensemble rehearsal and teaching techniques.
3) JUNIORS/SENIORS: apply prior and present pedagogical courses and field
experiences to the rehearsal situations; gradually assume leadership roles in organizational and teaching processes.

TEXTS:

Sheet music will be supplied. You will need to return these at the end of the semester. Failure to return materials will result in an incomplete for pedagogy course(s) and a charge per item.

EVALUATION: A passing grade will constitute the following:

1)ATTENDANCE:  YOU ARE ALLOWED ONE UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM LAB. Each unexcused absence beyond one will result in a failure for the course. *This could result in the necessity of adding an extra semester prior to graduation, or completing a special project.
Participation: each student is expected to participate in guest speaker presentations, class discussions, lab ensemble, and any other scheduled activity during class time.

2) CONCERT ATTENDANCE:        
As per the Department’s policy, music majors will be required to attend a specified number of concerts in order to satisfy the concert attendance policy for MUS 200. 
You may choose 2 VOCAL concerts (1 from the list below) to satisfy this requirement: 
1. All students must attend at least 1 concert off-campus that is public or private school related (grades K-12) and 1 on-campus concert approved by Dr. Jones in the list below.  All concerts given by school groups at the OMEA state conference are approved.
2. Programs from each concert must be signed by the director of the concert and turned in to Dr. Jones. These concerts should also be recorded in your concert portfolio.
3. A written evaluative summary (typed) must be completed for a minimum of ONE VOCAL CONCERT and needs to include the following :

In List Form:
a. Name of ensemble; date/time of concert; director(s)' name
b. Description of ensemble(s) - include grade level(s) of performers
c. Context for performance (e.g. conference, community concert, etc.)

In Paragraph Form:

d. Comment on concert procedures and dress
e. Evaluate the quality of the concert (were the students prepared?)
f. In addition to the actual performance, what else did you observe that helped the success of the program?
g. What one aspect of the program particularly impressed you? Why?
h. What one aspect of the program would you improve upon if you were the instructor? Why?
i. What did you learn from this concert and what concepts can you apply toward teaching?

Grammar and punctuation will be evaluated.  Please have someone proof your work.
Your may fulfill your on-campus requirement by attendance at 1 of the following concerts:
