Major (Retired)
Al Womack served on active duty from 29 August 1975 to 31
January 1999. He served as an enlisted soldier from 1975 to
December 1980 reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant as a Personnel
Administration Specialist. He served 2 ½ years in the 82d
Airborne Division at Ft Bragg, NC and 2 years with the 2d
Infantry Brigade at Schofield Barracks, HI.
He was
commissioned on 5 December 1980 after completion of Officer
Candidate School as an Infantry Officer. After completing the
Infantry Officer Basic Course he was assigned to 1st Battalion,
3rd Training Brigade at Ft Leonard Wood, MO serving 12 months as
a Training Officer and 18 months as a Basic Training Company
Commander.
He attended
Initial Entry Rotary Wing training (Flight School) at Ft Rucker,
Alabama in 1984, was branched Aviation, and served with the
101st Airborne Division, Ft Campbell, KY with an Attack
Helicopter Battalion, an Air Cavalry Squadron and Division
Staff. After attending the Aviation Officer Advance Course in
1988 he was assigned to Korea serving as a staff officer with an
Air Assault Battalion and as a company commander with an Attack
Helicopter Battalion with the 2d Infantry Division.
He returned to
Ft Hood, TX in 1990 and served as an S-3 Staff Officer, Rear
Detachment Commander and S-1 Staff Officer with the Aviation
Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. He was assigned to the Aviation
Readiness Group at Ft Sheridan, IL working with Aviation units
in the National Guard and Reserves of a six state area from
1993-1995.
He was assigned
to the University of Dayton in 1995 as the Executive Officer and
Enrollment officer until he retired in January 1999. He worked
for 1 1/2 years as a civilian supervisor and recruiter until he
returned in August 2000 as the enrollment officer.
He is a
graduate of the Combined Arms Staff Service School and the
Command and General Staff College in 1990 and 1995
respectively. Al attended Bowling Green State University from
1968-1972 as a Physical Education major, wrestled on the varisty
team for three years and was captain of the wrestling team his
senior year. He returned to BGSU in 1975 and completed his
Bachelor of Science in Education degree.
He holds the
airborne badge, air assault bade and the aviator’s badge.
His awards
include the Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC), Army Commendation
Medal (4OLC) and two Army Achievement Medals.
He is married
to Beth Wright Womack and has three children, Gabe (30), Shiloh
(28) and Rachel (26).
