Notes to the Company
-by c/1SG Wall

Fighting Flyers,

I wanted to take a little time and you all know how excited I am to be the new 1stSGT for the upcoming semester along with the events and changes that will accompany it. I plan to work alongside the Battalion staff in order to hit the ground running next semester.

As you have probably seen, there are a lot of changes happening throughout the Battalion; including how the Company is being structured with the MS IIIs in charge and in the Battalion staff as the MS IV’s get commissioned –which everyone should attend. With this new team in place we will take our lessons learned this year and apply them to the future. We are going to make sure we get things right from the start so everyone understands the format, and we avoid mistakes throughout the semester. With a large MS I class joining the Battalion; we hope to get them integrated and up to speed in order to keep driving forward with events for the new year.

In the first semester we have: Moving In, Wright Patterson Air Force Marathon, FLRC, Fall FTX, Ranger Challenge (1st Place), Cadet of the Semester, PT Tests, Dinning In, and more.

I strongly encourage all of you to get involved in the voluntary activities while also helping the new cadets feel welcome and involved. ROTC is what you want it to be and what you make of it. It will be a greater experience if you become involved and work to improve yourselves as well as the image of UD Army ROTC.

If you have any concerns about the changes being made or suggestions for improvements, let me know. If you are attending an event this summer, have a great time and represent the Fighting Flyer Battalion proudly with “Ultimate Domination”. For everyone, I hope you have a fun and safe summer and are ready to return next year with your heads up, feet running, and ready to go.

Meet the Cadet of the Semester
-by c/1LT Miller

The results are in and Cadet Brian Focareto has been chosen as Cadet of the Semester for the Spring semester, 2009. Cadet Focareto was born and raised in Parma, Ohio which is a small suburb of Cleveland. He attended Holy Name High School there and played football and pole vaulted on their track team.

Upon graduation from Holy Name, Cadet Focareto decided to follow his life-long dream of being a soldier and chose to join our Battalion over 5 other schools who also offered him a scholarship – including the Citadel. When I interviewed Brian he told me he doesn’t regret the choice at all and absolutely loves UD and has met some great friends while being here.

Cadet Focareto has stayed very busy during his time in ROTC between his school schedule (which he maintained a 3.6 gpa), Ranger Challenge, and other events as requested of him through ROTC. He mentioned his greatest accomplishments this year was competing in RC, competing in the recent Mountain Man Marathon in Tennessee, and scoring a 340 on the Army Physical Fitness Test.

The Cadet of the Semester competition is open to all cadets each semester and consists of five events: a written test, a practical exercise of setting up and recovering a claymore mine, an Army physical fitness test, a marksmanship qualification, and an oral review board. This semester consisted of 5 cadets who put up stiff competition. Cadet Focareto is extremely proud to have come out above the completion to be named this semester’s top cadet.

When not dealing with his studies or ROTC related matters Brian enjoys listening to country music and watching the Country Music Channel. His parents, Pat & Danielle Focareto, reside in Parma, OH. He also has two siblings; a sister (22) who is a recent graduate of Ashland University, and a brother (20) who is currently attending college at Findlay University.

Everyone make sure you congratulate Cadet Brian Focareto on a job well done! If you are interested in competing for the Cadet of the Semester next fall should see the Battalion Sergeant Major, Cadet CSM Christopher Randall.
