[Approved March 10, 2006]                                                                                                       DOC I-06-02

PROPOSAL TO THE ACADEMIC SENATE

TITLE:                         Change in Course Withdrawal Policy

SUBMITTED BY:       Academic Policies Committee of the Senate

DATE:                         March 10, 2006

ACTION:                    Legislative

Background

The current withdrawal policy set out in the Bulletin includes the following statement: “During this period a W will be permitted only for special nonacademic reasons, which include, but are not limited to, poor personal health, financial difficulties, family matters of health, and change in career objectives.” Including “change in career objectives” in the category of “special nonacademic reasons” poses a problem for deans’ offices because it is not consonant with other examples given and because it is a commonly used excuse for poor academic performance.

Proposal

Upon a recommendation from ARSIC, the APC proposes the following language instead of the sentence quoted above: “During this period, a W will be permitted only for special nonacademic reasons. These include, but are not limited to financial difficulties and matters of personal or family health. Documentation may be required.”

Effective with the 2006-2007  Bulletin
