1. Opening Prayer: The meeting opened with a moment of
silence and the Lord’s Prayer.
2. Roll Call: Twenty-four of thirty-six senators were
present.
3. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of April 28, 2000 were
approved with some wording changes.
4. Committee Reports
Academic Policies Committee
Mathematics educational experts reviewed the Quantitative Competency
program during the summer. They suggested several modifications. The APC’s
top priority this fall is to consider the modifications, and have a
proposal to the senate as soon as possible.
Faculty Affairs Committee
There was no report from the FAC.
Student Academic Policies Committee
There was no report from the SAPC.
5. Undergraduate Student Representative on the ECAS
The undergraduate student elected to the ECAS at the January 2000
senate meeting is unable to attend the ECAS meetings. The ECAS will seek
a replacement from among the other undergraduate students.
6. Provost's Council Report
The President of the university will meet with the Provost Council
and the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate to discuss
replacements for the Provost and Senior Vice-President.
The agenda of the Provost's Council was distributed. It contained a
large list of items to be considered through February. A question
concerning the meaning of differential staffing was asked. The Provost
responded that these were positions at the university in which faculty
had little or no involvement such as residences, technology support, and
student development.
7. Senate Meetings
It was pointed out that the senate sponsors the budget meeting in
November, during which the administration presents their budget and
priorities, and responds to questions from the faculty. It was noted
that attendance at these meetings has been low. The senators were asked
to consider whether or not the budget meeting should be continued.
8. Committee Meetings
Senators were asked to separate into their committees and discuss
meeting times and issues for the semester.
9. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted: George R. Doyle, Jr., Secretary of the Academic
Senate
