The committee was updated on the chair’s meeting with Troy Washington and Joe Untener.  Discussion focused on additional issues and/or questions the committee would like addressed or considered by Human Resources and the Provost’s office in the development of the next draft of the policy regarding faculty background checks.  Those questions/concerns included:

·        Will there be a list of offenses or classes of offenses for which someone would be denied employment?

·        Will EEOC be involved in any of the decision making?

·        Has John Hart been consulted regarding the policy, its implementation or repercussions if we do not implement such a policy?

·        What about background checks for part-time faculty?  There is some concerns that problematic hires are more likely to occur there than with tenure-track faculty.

·        What about graduate students, particularly GA's, and work study students?  They are also University employees.

·        At what point in the decision making process will the dean/chairs be involved?  What will a chair be able to say to someone who is denied a position based on a background check?  Will the Provost's office handle that call?

·        Will there be an appeal process?  What will that process be?  How will that process affect the hiring process (e.g., getting next choice in candidates)?

·        Could we see a copy/draft of the application form on which permission for a background check is requested?

It was also decided by the committee that, after receiving and discussing the next draft of the policy, a meeting with representatives from the Black Faculty Association would be held to discuss the issues presented in the Association’s comments to the Senate.

The next meeting will be held on March 1st ad 9:00 SJ 325.  Dr. Joe Untener and Troy Washington will be present for discussion of the new draft of the background check policy.
