Discussion of Post-tenure Review

The committee ”tossed around” various thoughts concerning PTR.

  1. The PTR policy is a requirement of the UD Board of Trustees and is in the Faculty Handbook.  It just hasn’t been implemented except in a few departments.  Most state university systems have PTR processes.  It seems that many were developed to head off legislation from the state Boards of Education to do away with tenure.
  2. The review should be formative – for developmental purposes only.

Most state universities have developed PTR procedures, some formative, some summative.  While some faculty have apparently chosen to retire due to the review, it is not known if any have been fired.

  1. Any PTR that is developed at UD should be as nonintrusive as possible, i.e. capitalize on processes already in place.
    1. PTR could be tied in to the review for a sabbatical.
    2. PTR could be tied in to a review for promotion.
    3. PTR could be tied in to accreditation.
    4. PTR could be tied in to the annual review that faculty provide for the chair.
  2. Dave Biers will discuss the PTR with Board of Trustee members at the May meeting to get a sense of what they expect.

Next meeting:  10:00 am, Thursday, May 24, 2007
