MINUTES OF THE FACULTY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE November 1, 2000 1:00 p.m. Jesse Phillips 470 Presiding: Frances Pestello Present: Korte, Miner, Hary, Palermo, Gerla, Yungblut, Pestello 1. The committee briefly discussed the Palermo Faculty Compensation Study. The committee will discuss this report more extensively when it is completed and available to the whole committee. Dr. Miner needed information from this report for the Senate budget priorities to send to the ELC. 2. I-98-24 Evaluation of Administrators: The committee is concerned that the committee composed of administrators, faculty, and students to develop procedures for evaluating administrators was never created. The committee is concerned that faculty have minimal influence over mid-level administrators, who make academic decisions. The committee felt that this issue has become even more important, since it was put on the FAC agenda two years ago, particularly with the advent of the Learning Village. The fundamental principle is what role do faculty play in the evaluation of administrators. The committee will continue this discussion at the next meeting. We will develop the recommendations that we would like to send to the Executive Committee. 3. I-0-09 Role of Provost and Deans in Tenure Decisions: Professor Gerla is meeting with his subcommittee next week. He circulated a memo to the FAC, which we will discuss briefly at our next meeting. Professor Gerla plans to address the standards first and procedures second. 4. I-00-13 Faculty Workload Policy: Dr. Pestello reported that the letter to the Deans was written and would be mailed later in the day. She also said that she will invite members of the Faculty Development Committee to a meeting to discuss the work they have done on the workload issue. 5. Dr. Pestello requested that committee members send questions to her or Dr. Miner to pose to the candidates for the Acting Provost position during their presentation to the Executive Committee of the Senate. 6. The meeting adjourned at 1:55. 7. The next meeting of the Faculty Affairs Committee will be on November 15, 2000 in Jesse Phillips Center, 470. |
