MINUTES OF THE FACULTY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE November 15, 2000 1:00 p.m. Jesse Phillips 470 Presiding: Frances Pestello Present: Korte, Palermo, Gerla, Pestello, Dandaneau, Conniff, Conte 1. I-00-13 Faculty Workload Guidelines: Dr. Pestello informed the Committee that she had sent the letter to the Deans requesting information on the Units of the Faculty Workload Guidelines. She also suggested that the Committee should invite members of the Faculty Development Committee to the December meeting to learn about their work on Faculty Workload. 2. I-0-09 Role of Provost and Deans in Tenure Decisions: Professor Gerla updated the committee on the first meeting of his subcommittee. The subcommittee discussed procedures across units. The Provost’s Office would like procedures and a clear standard of review. All agreed that the standards and procedures should not be a "straight-jacket" that eliminates administrative discretion, but their should be boundaries to this discretion. After discussion in the subcommittee and with FAC members, Professor Gerla will draft a first draft of the standards based on his review of materials from AAUP and various accrediting units. The subcommittee will then discuss and edit his initial draft. Professor Gerla will keep the FAC informed of his progress. 3. I-98-11 Lecturer Representation on the Senate: This issue has passed the Senate, but requires a faculty vote to take effect. We need to hold open meetings for the faculty, before the election is held. The Committee discussed the timing of these open meetings. Members suggested that we could hold one open meeting during our regular meeting time and possibly one other later time, such as 3:30-4:30. The proposed change is also on the Senate web page. We can also refer faculty to the web page, when we announce the timing of the open meetings 4. The meeting adjourned at 1:50. 5. The next meeting of the Faculty Affairs Committee will be on November 29, 2000 in Jesse Phillips Center, 470. |
