ACADEMIC POLICY COMMITTEE

Approved Minutes

March 6, 2006

Members Present: J. Biddle, B. Conniff, C. Duncan, M. Morton, P. Meyers, J. O’Gorman, R. Penno,  S. Singer, R. Wells

ACTION ITEMS:

·         Approved minutes of February 6, 2006

·         Approved the following Class rank policy statement.

The University of Dayton does not calculate class rank when measuring a student’s        academic performance.  Evaluation of academic achievement should be made by    considering the complete academic record of each student

·         Approved the following revision in the policy on determination of final honors category.
” If a student qualifies for honors or moves into a higher DIFFERENT category of honors on the basis of his or her academic degree program grade-point average, the diploma issued will note the higher APPROPRIATE honor category, notation will be made on the transcript and permanent record, and an appropriate honors key will be awarded. Due to time constraints no adjustments/corrections can be made to the actual printed graduation program.”

·         Approved, in principle, adding a “disclaimer” to the Graduate Program that would cover both the official diploma and final honors determination. J. Biddle will confer with Tom Westendorf about any existing disclaimer language RE the official diploma; the APC will then revise that language to include honors designation. The disclaimer would be similar to the following: “Awarding official diplomas and determining appropriate honors will occur upon completion of all degree requirements and financial obligations.”

DISCUSSION ITEMS:

1.       A Proposal for a Student Honor Pledge was forwarded to the APC from the Student Academic Policies Committee. It was introduced at this meeting and will be formally discussed and the next APC meeting. Initial questions revolved around the status of both the Honors Code that was discussed last year as well as current policies about “academic dishonesty.” J. Biddle will seek clarification from ECAS regarding these questions in relation to the Honor Pledge document.

2.      J. Biddle will distribute to the APC the next draft from the University-wide P&T Committee.

Meeting adjourned,

James Biddle
