SAPCAS Minutes - February 26,2001

Minutes of Student Academic Policies Committee

February 26, 2001

3:00 – 3:40 pm in KL 204

Senators Present: Bartley, Castellano, DeConinck, Doyle, Ilg, McKenna

Issues

Alternate Grading System: I – 00 – 16

A draft of a proposal to the Academic Senate was reviewed. The proposal contained information gathered by the SAPC, a rationale for adding A-, B+, B-, and C+ to the undergraduate grading system, and the meaning and quality points associated with both the undergraduate and graduate grading systems.

The committee decided that the proposal for the undergraduate system would remain at: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D, and F. This scheme is marginally preferred by the faculty. More importantly does not include a C-, which causes problems with the new competency program and the retake policy.

At the graduate level the committee endorsed: A, A-, B+, B, C, and F. It was felt that grades of B- and C+ were not necessary. If a graduate student is doing poorly, a C will get the message across.
