of the Academic Senate Minutes October 16, 2000 2:00 – 2:55 p.m. Present Senators: Burrows, Doyle, Dries, Eimermacher, Ilg, Mott Issues: Policy on Fair, Responsible, and Acceptable Use of Electronic Resourses The following items were noted as possibly in need of rewriting or clarification. The items listed are not based on a consensus; some are the opinion of one or a few individuals. 1. Page 2, First sentence should be reworded from "members of the University community." to " individuals that use university facilities." It is more inline with remarks made later. 2. Page 2, Third paragraph, third line: add ", research and service" and mission"s." 3. Page 3, First paragraph, second sentence, after teaching and learning add "research and service" 4. Page 4, Under 6a), 2. What is wrong with giving your password or ID to others as long as the giver is held responsible? 5. Page 5, Under 6b), 2 Why is it wrong to obscure the identity of the sender of email or other electronic messages? There may be cases where anonymous information about a sensitive matter would be preferable. 6. Page 5, There are a number of places where the phrase "without authorization" would be appropriate. 7. Page 5, Under 6b), 10 The definition of collude includes cooperation. Many faculty give assignments in which it is required that students work together to produce a report. 8. Page 5, Under 6b), 11 Data given to students to work on a project is often falsified purposely to 1) see if students can figure out the problem with the data, or 2) because the true data may be proprietary to a company. 9. Page 5, Under 6b), 15 Why is this wrong? 10. Page 5, Under 6c), 1 Why is sending information about pyramid schemes wrong? 11. Page 6, Under 6d), 1 Unwanted information (junk mail) is sent repeatedly by many. 12. Page 6, Under 6d), 4 Is giving a poor recommendation about an individual not allowed? 13. Page 6, Under 6e) 1 Does not the university allow faculty to do consulting, proof read manuscripts, etc. for nominal pay? This statement should be quantified somehow. 14. Page 6, Under 6e) 5 Does this hurt anyone? Doesn’t the university encourage faculty and students to be involved in some types of entrepreneurship? This would make an email about a prospective consulting job illegal. Is it a question of degree of use or abuse? 15. Page 7, Under 6f) 3 Is dissemination of obscene material among consenting adults, or for academic purposes illegal. For example, is showing a film with explicit sexual activity in a classroom wrong? Is sending nude pictures between two arts students permissible, but not between two other students? 16. Page 7, Under 8. Suggest that the term be 3 years and 1/3 of the membership rotated in each year. 17. Page 8, Under 9,e Should dismissal be a penalty for repeated violations? There are a good number of grammatical errors. Next Meeting – The next meeting will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 30, 2000 in KU 253. |
