Student Academic Policies Committee of the Academic Senate

Minutes from the meeting of December 07, 2006

Approved 2/2/07

Present: Dale Courte, Andrew Fist, Wade Luckett, Russ Hardie, Erik Elam, Mark Brill

Guest: Paul Benson

Minutes of the Nov. 17, 2006 meeting were approved unanimously.

Paul Benson was present to discuss an upcoming UD proposal to an Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) program titled “Core Commitments: Educating Students for Personal and Social Responsibility. Since the AAC&U requests that such proposals address “cultivating personal and academic integrity”, including “principled engagement with a formal academic honors code”, Dr. Benson wanted to familiarize himself with the current status of the SAPAS work on an Honor Code. Current drafts were shared, and the status of the committee’s efforts was discussed.

Mark Brill presented an update to the description of the proposed Honor Board, and this latest draft was discussed. Some minor revisions were recommended and accepted, and the next draft is expected to be near complete.

Andrew Fist reported that he will work to finalize the prose for the Statement of Purpose.

Discussion then turned to the task of drafting the Honor Code itself. It was decided that members would identify and review all relevant sections of the Student Handbook, as well as codes from peer institutions. It was agreed that at the next meeting, members’ findings will be discussed, and discussion will focus on the desired content and form of the code.

Meeting was then adjourned.
